The Mission District, commonly refered as the Missionx was originally known as "the Mission lands" The Mission got its name from the Mission San Francisco de Asis which is the oldest remaining building in San Francisco. It is part of the chain of 21 Spanish Alta California Missions that go as far south as San Diego and as far north as Sonoma.
Originally in the 1770's, the Spanish settled in the area of the Mission. Overtime the land of the Mission were developed into housing and was popular during the Gold Rush. Many immigrants came into the Mission and the culture and religion grew from there.
